What is horse hair?
Horse hair is a natural fiber taken from a horse’s mane and tail. After collection, the fibers are carefully washed, sterilized, curled, and heat-set to create a springy, breathable filling. At House of Dreamz we use premium, ethically sourced horse hair as a performance layer in pillows, toppers, and mattresses.
Why it’s good for you
- Exceptional breathability – Each fiber is hollow and naturally crimped, creating tiny air channels that move heat and moisture away from your body. You feel drier and more temperate through the night.
- Moisture-wicking & fast-drying – Horse hair can absorb and release moisture rapidly, helping maintain a fresh, hygienic sleep climate that’s less hospitable to dust mites.
- Natural springiness – The curled fibers behave like micro-springs. They cushion pressure points while instantly re-expanding, so comfort stays consistent for years.
- Durable by design – Properly prepared horse hair resists matting and compressing, making it an ideal long-life material in premium bedding.
- Naturally clean – Thorough washing and sterilization remove residues and odors. The dry, well-ventilated structure supports a cleaner sleep environment without relying on synthetics.
How horse hair is made into bedding
- Responsible sourcing – Fibers are obtained as a by-product of grooming and the leather industry.
- Purification – The raw hair is repeatedly washed and sterilized to meet strict hygiene standards.
- Curling & heat-setting – Fibers are twisted, curled, and heat-set to lock in their resilient, spring-like structure.
- Blending & grading – Length and fineness are graded; fibers may be blended for the ideal balance of loft, support, and airflow.
-
Hand layering or filling –
- Pillows: the fibers are blow-filled or hand-filled for buoyant, breathable support.
- Toppers: horse hair is hand-teased into even layers, often needled or encased, then tufted for stability and airflow.
-
Mattresses: horse-hair layers are placed above support cores (springs or foams) to add responsive comfort, temperature regulation, and moisture control.
Where we use it
- Pillows – Springy, shape-holding support that stays cool and dry. Great for hot sleepers and those who dislike flattening pillows.
- Toppers – Instantly elevates comfort with breathable lift and improved pressure relief without trapping heat.
- Mattresses – As a natural comfort layer, horse hair adds ventilation, quick moisture release, and long-term resilience for a consistently balanced feel.
Care & longevity
- Air regularly – Give your pillow or topper occasional fresh air to keep fibers dry and bouncy.
- Rotate – Rotating toppers and mattresses helps maintain an even feel.
- Protect – Use quality protectors to keep the cover pristine; spot-clean only as directed.
